More details about the rumored sequel to the popular tablet computer iPad have been leaked, suggesting that Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs might have shifted his strategy in favor of including a smaller screen version in the lineup early next year.

According to parts manufacturers, a smaller version of the iPad might be introduced in the first quarter of 2011. The new model, if released, would signal a significant change in Apple’s iPad strategy, largely because it contradicts what Jobs himself said earlier, denouncing smaller screen tablet PCs. He even went so far as to call 7-inch tablet PCs “dead on arrival.”

A growing number of leaked sources are pointing to the introduction of iPad 2 early next year, and the media is paying attention to specific details about the sequel’s hardware and which companies get contracts to supply their parts to Apple.

Reuters reported that touchscreen chip designer Wintek Corp, battery Simplo Techonology and AVY Precision have been selected as suppliers for the next-generation iPads.

A supplier whose name has not been confirmed said that a smaller version of the original 9.7-inch iPad was planned.

Another supplier said iPad 2 will be equipped with front and rear cameras, allowing for video conference calls.

Last week, Taiwan industry publication DigiTimes reported that the iPad 2 will be rolled out within the next 100 days. The iPad was launched on Jan. 27 this year, fueling fresh interest in the tablet PC market.

The iPad is currently attracting a record number of app developers, including newspapers keen to carve out a share in the online newspaper segment of the iPad eco-system, with their offline revenues falling steeply due to declining subscribers.

The popularity of iPad as a channel to read news, however, cuts both ways: On the one hand, it offers a chance for a newspaper to find a new online revenue source; on the other, more offline subscribers will quit subscribing to their papers.

Citing a survey conducted by the University of Missouri’s Reynolds Journalism Institute, News Factor reported 58.1 percent of those using the iPad at least an hour a day for news said they were very likely to cancel their print subscriptions within six months.

애플이 내년 상반기에 아이패드2를 출 시하면서 크기를 절반 정도로 줄이고 화상 카메라를 2대 장착하는 등 개선안을 모색 중인 것으로 10일(현지시간) 전해졌다.

아이패드에 부품을 공급하는 복수의 하청업체 관계자들은 현재 부품업체들이 내년 1.4분기 상품 출시를 목표로 준비를 서두르고 있다고 말했다.

익명을 요구한 부품업체 관계자는 현재 아이패드 모델의 크기(9.7인치)를 거의 절반 정도로 줄인 모델을 준비하고 있다고 설명했다.

이는 7인치 모델은 화면이 너무 작아 소프트웨어를 제대로 구현할 수 없다는 스티브 잡스 애플 최고경영자(CEO)의 기존 발언을 뒤집는 행보다.

두께를 줄이고 무게를 더 가볍게 하면서 해상도는 올리는 개선안도 아이패드2에 반영될 예정이다.

다른 부품사 관계자는 신형 모델은 전후 양면에 카메라를 장착, 온라인 화상 회의가 가능하도록 할 것이라고 설명했다.

복수의 관계자들은 대만의 터치스크린 제조업체 윈텍, 배터리 제조업체인 심플로 등이 차기 아이패드 모델의 부품 공급사로 선정됐다고 말했다.
업계 전문가들은 애플이 내년 1월에 아이패드2를 발표하고 4월쯤에 매장에 상품을 내놓을 것으로 보고 있다.

애플의 아이패드는 지난 1월 출시와 동시에 오랜 기간 정체된 태블릿 컴퓨터 시장에 활기를 불어넣었다.

현재까지 출고된 물량만 1천300만대에 달하며 내년 출고량은 올해의 3배 수준에 달할 것으로 추정되고 있다. (연합뉴스)
